The senator's hold on military nominations is in protest of the Pentagon's alleged use of government funding for abortion travel. This blockade has already led to leadership vacancies within the military, including the Marine Corps. Democrats criticized the senator for punishing military leaders who were not responsible for the abortion travel policy. During his confirmation hearing, Brown also faced contentious questions on diversity, inclusion, and the COVID-19 vaccine. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called on top Republicans to pressure the senator to back off. If confirmed, Brown would be the second Black officer to become chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
