President Joe Biden has chosen Admiral Lisa Franchetti to lead the Navy, making her the first woman to be a U.S. military service chief. Despite the recommendation of Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Biden selected Franchetti based on her extensive command and executive experience. Franchetti, currently the vice chief of operations for the Navy, would also become the first female member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Biden is nominating Admiral Samuel Paparo to lead U.S. Indo-Pacific Command instead. Franchetti's nomination is being held up by Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville, who is protesting a Defense Department policy.
