The international ShakeOut earthquake drill, known as the Great Shakeout, will take place on October 19th, with over 20 million participants worldwide practicing earthquake safety. Nearly 10 million California residents have registered for the drill, as the state is at a higher risk of earthquakes. The drill aims to raise awareness, update emergency plans, and reduce structural hazards. California is projected to lose an average of $9.6 billion a year from earthquake damage, a significant increase from previous years. Additionally, New York experienced a rare earthquake in May, and a powerful earthquake rocked northern California last year, leaving thousands without power.
