"Formerly Imprisoned US Navy Officer Released from Custody in Japan and US"

US Navy officer Lt. Ridge Alkonis, previously jailed in Japan for negligent driving resulting in the death of two people, has been paroled and released from US prison after being transferred from a Japanese prison. His family argued that he was ill, not negligent, and therefore committed no crime, and pushed for his transfer back to the US under an international treaty. The US Parole Commission ordered his immediate release with no supervision, following direct engagement by Vice President Kamala Harris and national security adviser Jake Sullivan.
