Judge Halts Tennessee Drag Ban Law Before Implementation

A federal judge has issued a temporary injunction against a new Tennessee law that restricts drag shows, siding with a group that filed a lawsuit claiming the statute violates the first amendment. The law changed the definition of adult cabaret to include "male or female impersonators" and banned adult cabaret performances from public property or anywhere minors might be present. The judge found the law to be vague and overly broad, and failed to make a compelling argument as to why it was necessary. This marks the second major proposal targeting LGBTQ+ people passed by state lawmakers in Tennessee this year.
