Catholic dioceses file for bankruptcy amidst flood of abuse lawsuits.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany has filed for bankruptcy protection due to hundreds of lawsuits alleging sexual abuse. The diocese is dealing with a flood of lawsuits dating back to when New York temporarily suspended the statute of limitations to give victims of childhood abuse the ability to pursue even decades-old allegations against clergy members, teachers, Boy Scout leaders, and others. The bankruptcy filing will allow the diocese to develop a reorganization plan that will determine available assets.
