NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell Resigns, Leaving Behind Mixed Legacy
Keechant Sewell, the first woman to lead the NYPD, has resigned from her position as commissioner. No reason was given for her departure, but it is expected to be effective by July 1. First Deputy Commissioner Edward Caban is expected to take over on an interim basis. Sewell maintained a relatively low profile during her tenure, but was criticized for declining to prosecute more than 300 cops in 2022 after CCRB substantiated complaints against them. The NYPD has faced ongoing criticism for treatment of nonwhite New Yorkers, and a federal monitor's report filed earlier this month found that Neighborhood Safety Teams largely target Black and Latino New Yorkers.
