Florida judge Elizabeth Scherer, who presided over the Parkland school shooting trial, has announced her resignation effective June 30 to pursue other career opportunities. Scherer, who was appointed to the bench in 2012, gained national attention for her handling of the televised penalty trial of Nikolas Cruz, who received a life sentence for the 2018 mass killing of 14 students and three staff members at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Her resignation comes after the Florida Supreme Court removed her from overseeing post-conviction motions of another defendant due to concerns about her impartiality.
