Raccoon euthanized after being kissed at Maine pet store

A raccoon brought into a Maine pet store for a nail trim was euthanized and tested for rabies after several customers kissed it. The raccoon tested negative for the disease, but raccoons are one of the most common carriers of rabies in the state, and bringing the wild animal into a pet store constituted an unnecessary risk to public health. The woman who brought the raccoon into the store has not been identified. Store customers who touched the animal should still contact their health care providers as a precaution.
