The shooter at Joel Osteen's Lakewood church in Texas, identified as Genesse Ivonne Moreno, legally purchased an AR-15 rifle despite a history of mental illness and past criminal record. Moreno had been placed under emergency detention for a mental health emergency in 2016 and had a documented mental health history. Despite being arrested multiple times, including on misdemeanor weapons charges in 2022, Moreno was still able to legally purchase the firearm used in the shooting. Neighbors in Conroe, Texas, where Moreno lived, alleged that police had failed to intervene despite frequent harassment and threats from Moreno. The shooting resulted in Moreno's death and left a seven-year-old child in critical condition.
