"Ex-Deputy from 'Goon Squad' Sentenced to 20 Years for Torture of Black Men"

A former law enforcement officer, part of the Goon Squad, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for federal civil rights offenses after pleading guilty to torturing and sexually assaulting two Black men and a third white man during a raid on their home. The deputy, Hunter Elward, who shot one of the victims in the mouth, received the maximum penalty and tearfully apologized to the victims and their families in court, acknowledging the brutal conduct within the Rankin County sheriff’s department. While one victim forgave him, another expressed skepticism, stating that if he hadn't been caught, he would still be engaging in similar behavior.
