Connecticut Lawmaker Attacked After Eid Prayer Service: Suspect Arrested

A man was arrested in Connecticut for attacking state lawmaker Representative Maryam Khan, the first Muslim elected to the Connecticut House of Representatives, after an Eid al-Adha prayer service. The attacker, Andrey Desmond, has a history of psychiatric hospitalizations and was charged with unlawful restraint, assault, breach of peace, and interfering with the police. While the motive for the attack is not confirmed, the timing and the fact that Khan wears a hijab have led to calls for better protection of Muslims during Eid celebrations. Khan sustained minor injuries and is currently recovering.
