Young Volunteer Fatally Shot in Washington, D.C.

Ryan Realbuto, a volunteer with the Capuchin Franciscan Volunteer Corps, was fatally shot in a possible robbery while walking home with two other volunteers in D.C. The 23-year-old, described as genuine and caring, was halfway through his service with the Catholic volunteer group. Rising violent crime in the city has been a focus of public anxiety, with Realbuto being one of five people slain in the first three weeks of the year. Realbuto had been working with at-risk students in a work-study program and was described as "growing and coming into his own" during his time in the District.
