French researchers have found that hair-straightening products containing glyoxylic acid may lead to acute kidney failure due to the accumulation of calcium oxalate crystals in the kidneys. This observation was made after testing the product on animals and studying a case of renal damage in a young woman. The researchers recommend avoiding products containing glyoxylic acid and suggest withdrawing them from the market. They also noted that cases of renal complications from these products could be underdiagnosed and are preparing a nationwide survey.
