While fewer than 1% of bats carry rabies, bats that exhibit strange behavior or come into contact with humans are 10 times more likely to carry the disease. Any physical contact with a bat, no matter how small, is considered a potential exposure to rabies. Visitors who have been in contact with a bat should seek medical attention and report the encounter to the National Park Service Office of Public Health.
