David Byrne, the lead singer and songwriter of Talking Heads, has been on his own eclectic journey ever since the band broke up more than 30 years ago. His artistic innovations have blurred the boundaries of music, theater, and art. Byrne has won an Oscar, a Grammy, and a Tony, toured with salsa singers, collaborated with neuroscientists, made movies, and this summer his musical about the former First Lady of the Philippines Imelda Marcos opens on Broadway. Byrne is 71, and he is as creative, energetic, and unusual as he was when he was 23, an art school dropout, just starting to perform onstage with his friends as Talking Heads.
