Sufjan Stevens Overcomes Guillain-Barré Syndrome, Learns to Walk Again

Indie-rock singer Sufjan Stevens has revealed that he is recovering from Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare autoimmune disorder that has left him unable to walk. Stevens has been hospitalized for several weeks and is undergoing intensive physical therapy and occupational therapy to regain his mobility. Guillain-Barré syndrome is a neurological disorder in which the immune system mistakenly attacks parts of the nervous system. While the exact cause is unknown, it is often preceded by an infection. Most people with Guillain-Barré syndrome recover, although the recovery process can take weeks to years.
