Ethan Coen's solo directorial debut, Drive-Away Dolls, co-written with his wife Tricia Cooke, stars Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan as lesbian friends on a road trip to Florida who are chased by violent criminals after realizing their rental car has valuables stored in the trunk. The film, set at the turn of the millennium, is a playful yet subversive B-movie with innocent yet sexy and gritty elements. The fact that the movie was able to materialize now is a testament to the wider range of stories about queer characters that are prevalent in modern pop culture. Drive-Away Dolls hits theaters on Sept. 22.
