Fifth Avenue Celebrates 200 Years with Pedestrian Makeover and Block Party

Mayor Eric Adams announced a $152.7 million plan to transform Fifth Avenue from Bryant Park to Central Park into a pedestrian-friendly boulevard. The project will expand sidewalks, reduce traffic lanes, and add greenery, aiming to boost economic output and improve pedestrian safety. Inspired by Paris' Champs Élysées, the redesign will feature new trees, planters, and improved lighting. The initiative is expected to pay for itself within five years through increased tax revenue, with construction starting post-design completion in 2025.
