Hermeus, a startup based in Atlanta, is aiming to build a passenger plane capable of traveling at Mach 5, or 3,850 miles per hour, which would enable flights from New York to Paris in just 90 minutes. While the technical challenges are immense, Hermeus has secured Pentagon backing and plans to develop smaller hypersonic drones to prove the technology. The company has already won a $30 million contract from the U.S. Air Force and aims to have its first drone, Quarterhorse, flying by 2024. If successful, Hermeus plans to transition to building its planned airliner, Halcyon, with a fleet of hypersonic drones generating revenue from Defense Department missions.
