Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, is forming a team to combat deceptive artificial intelligence (AI) content ahead of the upcoming EU elections in June, aiming to address concerns about the potential use of generative AI to deceive voters. The company plans to launch an EU-specific Elections Operations Centre to identify and mitigate potential threats across its apps and technologies in real time. However, industry experts have raised concerns about the effectiveness of Meta's strategy, particularly in dealing with AI-generated images, highlighting serious limitations in the approach. Meta also announced the addition of three more fact-checking partners to help address the threat of misinformation, including content with AI-generated elements, and outlined measures to label and reduce the prominence of such posts, as well as restrictions on ads related to election legitimacy and processes.
