Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of DeepMind and CEO of Inflection, has called for the US to leverage its leadership in semiconductors to enforce global standards for the use of artificial intelligence (AI). Suleyman suggests restricting sales of Nvidia chips, which are crucial for training advanced AI systems, to buyers who agree to safe and ethical use of the technology. He proposes that these buyers should adhere to the same commitments made by leading US AI companies to the White House. Suleyman argues that this would allow the US to exert influence over other AI actors. He also emphasizes the need to focus on the practical near-term capabilities of AI, rather than being fixated on superintelligence.
