LA City Council Apologizes for Zoot Suit Riots After 80 Years
Los Angeles City Council has apologized for the Zoot Suit Riots that took place 80 years ago, where a group of sailors attacked Mexican Americans wearing zoot suits. The riots lasted for almost a week, and hundreds of Mexican Americans were arrested, with scores injured. The council has designated June 3 to 9 as "Zoot Suit Heritage Week" in the City of Los Angeles. Community members dressed in their zoot suits and other attire received the apology and called for unity among all groups in Los Angeles.
