Impending Dam Disasters Threaten Vermont Cities with Severe Flooding
The City of Montpelier has issued a warning that the nearby Wrightsville Dam could reach capacity, potentially leading to water release into the north branch of the Winooski River, which would significantly add to existing flood damage in the city. Residents living along the north branch and in downtown Montpelier are at the greatest risk, and with limited evacuation options, they are advised to seek higher floors in their homes. The city has requested swift water rescue teams to be deployed, as record rainfall in central Vermont is expected to continue. Flash flooding has already been reported in Barre, and the National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for Montpelier and nearby towns.
