"Steam Ceases Support for Older Windows Versions, Enhancing Security"
Steam has officially ended support for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 as of January 1, 2024, urging users to upgrade to newer versions of Windows for better security. The platform will no longer provide updates, including security patches, for these operating systems, and cannot guarantee the functionality of Steam on them. This move is partly due to reliance on an embedded version of Google Chrome that doesn't work on older Windows versions. The impact is expected to be minimal, as less than 1% of Steam users are on these unsupported OS versions. Valve is also enhancing security measures for developers to prevent supply chain attacks, although stronger multi-factor authentication methods are suggested for better protection.
