Family Sues California Jail Over HIV-Positive Inmate's Death
The family of Nicholas Overfield, a man with HIV who died after being detained at El Dorado County Jail, has filed a lawsuit alleging that he was denied access to his prescribed antiretroviral medication. Overfield's health deteriorated during his two-month detention, and he eventually died in June. The lawsuit names the jail, its health care provider Wellpath Community Care, LLC, and the County of El Dorado as defendants. Wellpath, which serves numerous correctional facilities, has faced criticism and lawsuits over its care of inmates. Overfield's mother is seeking accountability and justice for her son's death.
