Animal Shelters Battle Canine Influenza Outbreaks, Extending Closures
The Wake County Animal Shelter in North Carolina will remain closed through November due to a canine influenza outbreak. Four dogs have died from the flu, while 30 are currently sick and 77 have recovered. The shelter is seeking assistance from rescue organizations to relocate dogs and care for strays. Adoptions and surrenders are temporarily paused, but services such as adoption of foster pets and phone support for rehoming and stray pets are still available. Pet owners are urged to ensure their pets are up to date on vaccinations and take precautions to prevent the spread of the virus.
