Elwood Edwards, the iconic voice behind AOL's "You've got mail" alert, passed away at 74 after a long illness. Edwards, who recorded the famous phrase in 1989, became a defining sound of the early internet era. His voice, recorded on a cassette for $200, introduced many to email and made AOL feel more welcoming. Edwards later worked at WKYC Studios in Cleveland and retired in 2016. His voice continued to appear in media, including the film "You've Got Mail."
