Police in Paterson, New Jersey, fatally shot Najee Seabrooks, a 31-year-old mentor at an anti-violence organization, after he threatened to kill himself with a knife. The police had pleaded with Seabrooks for hours to come out of a locked bathroom, but he lunged at them with a knife when he finally emerged. The incident has sparked protests and criticism of using armed officers to deal with people in distress. Members of a violence intervention group said police officers kept them away during the standoff.
