A man with three federal warrants was taken into custody following a vehicle pursuit in North Topeka. The pursuit ended when a Shawnee County Sheriff's deputy successfully performed a Tactical Vehicle Intervention (TVI) maneuver. The suspect, Justin R. Indiana State Police trooper Aaron Smith died after being struck by a vehicle while leading officers on a pursuit. Smith was deploying stop sticks to stop the stolen vehicle when he was hit. Superintendent Doug Carter described Smith as a "shining star" and expressed condolences to his wife. The driver of the stolen vehicle crashed after hitting Smith, and three individuals were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
