Salman Rushdie Honored with Lifetime Disturbing the Peace Award

Author Salman Rushdie has been awarded the first-ever Lifetime Disturbing the Peace Award by the Vaclav Havel Center in New York. Rushdie, who has largely kept his whereabouts secret since being stabbed in 2022, accepted the award at a ceremony attended by writers and diplomats. The award recognizes Rushdie's commitment to free expression and his friendship with Vaclav Havel, the Czech playwright and dissident. Egyptian activist Alaa Abdel-Fattah was also honored with the Disturbing the Peace Award to a Courageous Writer at Risk.

"Salman Rushdie Honored in Rare New York Appearance"

Author Salman Rushdie made a rare public appearance to accept an award at the Vaclav Havel Center in New York, marking one of the few times he has spoken at an event since being attacked and hospitalized last year. Rushdie, known for his controversial novel The Satanic Verses, received a standing ovation from the crowd. The event also honored Egyptian political theorist Alaa Abd El-Fattah, who remains imprisoned in Egypt, and CBS journalist Leslie Stahl for her foreign policy coverage.
