Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a law that will allow juries to recommend the death penalty with an 8-to-4 vote, the lowest threshold in the nation. Previously, Florida required a unanimous vote to recommend capital punishment. The change was prompted by a Florida jury's decision last year to sentence the gunman who murdered 17 people in the 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School to life in prison without parole. At least 30 inmates who were sentenced to death in Florida have since been exonerated, more than in any other state.
