$310M Awarded to Family of Teen in Fatal Theme Park Ride Incident

A Florida jury has awarded $310 million to the family of Tyre Sampson, a 14-year-old who died after falling from a drop ride at an Orlando theme park in 2022. The jury found the ride's manufacturer, Funtime Handels GMBH, negligent for safety failures, as Tyre exceeded the ride's weight limit and there were no seat belts. The verdict follows a settlement with other defendants and has led to new safety regulations in Florida, including mandatory seat belts for tall rides.

Orlando FreeFall tragedy: One year later, updates and remembrance.

The FreeFall ride at ICON Park in Orlando, which was certified by a state inspector just 15 months ago, is being removed after the death of 14-year-old Tyre Sampson. Cell phone video of the fatal fall showed that the ride should have been stopped for a safety check, but instead, it continued up until approximately two and a half minutes into the ride cycle. Tyre weighed nearly 100 pounds more than should have been allowed on the ride, and the harness on the seat he was sitting in had been adjusted wider by seven inches. The ride owner has paid a $250,000 fine, and the family has settled their lawsuit while continuing to sue the ride makers.

Dismantling of Orlando FreeFall ride underway after teen's tragic death.

Crews are dismantling the 400-foot-tall Orlando FreeFall ride almost a year after 14-year-old Tyre Sampson fell off and died. The ride had been closed since the incident. The ride's harness was blamed for the accident, with a report stating that the seat's proximity sensor was manually adjusted to allow a restraint opening of nearly 7 inches, instead of the usual 3 inches. Sampson's mother announced a settlement with ICON Park and the ride's owner. She also called for rides over 100 feet to include seatbelts and harnesses. Orlando Slingshot, which operates the ride, announced in October 2022 that the ride would be torn down.
