The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) estimates that it needs $24.5 billion to repair and rehabilitate the Boston-area transit system, a $14.5 billion increase from its previous assessment in 2019. MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng has announced plans to address structural problems and remove slow zones by the end of 2024, with a planned closure of the Green Line to address issues in that area. The MBTA aims to lift 39 speed restrictions by the end of this year and the remainder by the end of 2024 through incremental shutdowns and diversions.
A bus driver was fired and a passenger was arrested after a shootout on a moving bus in North Carolina. The transit system says driver, David Fullard and passenger Omari Tobias opened fire "in rapid succession" after a dispute but it's not clear which man fired first. The transit system says drivers are not allowed to carry weapons while on duty and Fullard failed to follow protocol. Tobias was charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injuries, communicating threats, and carrying a concealed firearm.
