"MBTA's $24.5 Billion Plan to Revitalize Transit System"

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) estimates that it needs $24.5 billion to repair and rehabilitate the Boston-area transit system, a $14.5 billion increase from its previous assessment in 2019. The increase is attributed to an increase in the count of total assets, supply chain challenges, and aging assets. MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng has announced plans to address structural problems and remove slow zones by the end of 2024, with a planned closure of the Green Line to address issues in that area. The MBTA aims to lift 39 speed restrictions by the end of this year and the remainder by the end of 2024 through incremental shutdowns and diversions.
