Nurses at Austin's Ascension Seton Medical Center were blocked from entering the hospital after a daylong strike, as security guards turned them away at the entrance. The nurses, who are demanding improved conditions and lower nurse-to-patient staffing ratios, argued that they should be allowed to work as they know the facility and patients better. The hospital had contracted temporary nursing staff during the strike and stated that it was required to commit to a minimum of four days of work for them. The nurses' union called the additional three-day lockout a ploy to intimidate them from speaking out. Nurses at Ascension-owned hospitals in Kansas also faced similar restrictions.
