"NYC Drivers and Passengers Face Double-Barrel Fees and Income Concerns Amid Congestion Pricing Rollout"
New York City taxi passengers have been quietly paying a congestion price fee for years, and now another fee is set to be added this summer, potentially adding over $5 to many rides. Drivers fear their income will suffer as a result. The new fee will be stacked on top of the existing $2.50 congestion fee for yellow cabs and $2.75 fee for app-based car services. The added pressure from multiple layers of fees is concerning for an industry still recovering from the pandemic, with drivers expressing worries about the impact on their livelihoods. Despite the fees, ridesharing company Uber has endorsed the congestion toll proposal, and the MTA has stated that the current fees have raised nearly $1.5 billion for transit upgrades.
