San Francisco public schools could close on Monday as teachers strike, after 253 principals, assistant principals, program administrators and supervisors authorized a sympathy strike, with SEIU 1021 custodians and clerks joining in. Superintendent Maria Su said closures would occur if teachers walk out, and meals and after-school programs would shift to third-party sites. The district says its bargaining offers (two health-benefit options that aren’t fully funded plus a 6% raise over three years) were rejected by the teachers’ union, which also declined to meet this morning. A Saturday bargaining session is planned as both sides push to reach a deal, while administrators emphasize that keeping schools open safely would be impossible during a strike.
