'New York, New York': A Clash of Old and New in Broadway Review

"New York, New York," the latest musical offering from legendary songwriting partners John Kander and Fred Ebb, gets stuck between old-age pageantry and new-age sentiment. The musical, based on the 1977 Scorsese film of the same name, adds some fresh tunes, a new cast of characters, and an original book by David Thompson and Sharon Washington. 'Smash' Musical Confirmed for Broadway Run with Star-Studded Producers.

A musical adaptation of the NBC series "Smash" is set to debut on Broadway during the 2024-2025 season, with Steven Spielberg, Robert Greenblatt, and Neil Meron as lead producers. The production will be directed by Susan Stroman, with a score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, and a book by Bob Martin and Rick Elice. The musical will follow the process of mounting the musical "Bombshell," about the life of Marilyn Monroe, but will "depart liberally from the series."

A stage musical adaptation of the 2012 NBC series "Smash" is set to arrive on Broadway during the 2024-25 season, with Steven Spielberg producing. The musical will feature a top creative team, including director Susan Stroman, composers Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, book writers Rick Elice and Bob Martin, and the TV series’ choreographer Joshua Bergasse. The stage version will include new music and many of the Shaiman-Wittman songs from the TV series, but will also "depart liberally from the series."
