In 2023, Sudan descended into violent conflict as tensions between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) escalated into open warfare. Despite a previous deal to transition to a civilian-led government, the military leaders, Burhan and Hemeti, engaged in a power struggle that led to violent clashes, including an RSF attack on SAF headquarters. The conflict spread to Darfur, exacerbating ethnic tensions and resulting in atrocities, including targeted killings and sexual violence.
