Fiber optic cut causes major internet and cell outages in Western and Northwest Alaska.
A fiber optic data cable supplying internet and some cell service to Western Alaska was interrupted over the weekend after a fiber cut caused a system-wide outage. Repairs are underway, but it could take up to two months for a full restoration of service due to heavy ice likely causing the cut. The broken line is 34 miles offshore, at a depth of about 90 feet, and two repair ships are being mobilized to go to the location of the break.
