The Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the implosion of the Titan sub, which was attempting a dive to the wreckage of the Titanic with five people on board. The investigation will include authorities from Canada, France, and the United Kingdom. Investigators will look into possible misconduct, incompetence, negligence, unskillfulness, or willful violation of law by OceanGate, the company that operated the Titan, or by the Coast Guard itself. The U.S. Navy will not be using the Flyaway Deep Ocean Salvage System to assist in retrieving debris. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has also begun an investigation into the incident.

James Cameron, the director of Titanic, said he knew about the implosion of the Titan submersible days before it was confirmed. Cameron, a deep-sea explorer, had correctly guessed the fate of the submersible less than 24 hours after it disappeared. He received information from credible sources that there was some kind of loud noise consistent with an implosion event. The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed that debris evidence found near the wreck of the Titanic suggested that a “catastrophic implosion” had taken place, killing all five people aboard. Cameron believes the passengers on the sub “had some warning, that they heard some acoustic signature of the hull beginning to delaminate.”
