Despite the cold weather, the Holyoke St. Patrick's Parade was deemed a success. Lenny Jacobson, a Paper City native and top award winner, searched for his old Holyoke Catholic High jacket before marching in the parade. He previously marched in the parade as a member of his high school's basketball team in 1990-1991.
The 70th Annual Holyoke St. Patrick’s Parade took place on Sunday, showcasing prize-winning floats, championship bands, and notable celebrities. The parade draws on the Irish heritage of Holyoke and has grown from 25,000 spectators in 1952 to over 400,000 in 2011. The event features international and high school bands, as well as the famed Philadelphia Mummers String Bands.
The Holyoke St. Patrick's Parade will begin at 11:10 a.m. from the KMart Plaza on Route 5 and will be broadcasted live by 22News beginning at 12 p.m. Roads along the parade route will be closed starting at 10 a.m. 22News has been serving western Massachusetts for 70 years and will also be marching in the parade.
