The head of Sonic Team warns that leaks of game content can ruin licensing deals and plans, emphasizing the importance of controlling information to maintain excitement and avoid damaging collaborations. Sonic Superstars, the latest 2D Sonic game, offers innovative ideas and moments but falls short of being a classic due to slower gameplay, technical issues, and unintuitive boss fights. While the level design breaks up the traditional formula with unique elements, the game suffers from frustrating platforming sequences and unclear objectives. The bosses have multi-phase battles that add variety, but some strategies are not easily intuited. The inclusion of legacy zones lacks originality, and the optional emerald powers feel superfluous. Despite its flaws, Sonic Superstars showcases fresh ideas and moments that make it worth playing, although it could benefit from better polish and optimization.
The head of Sonic Team, Takashi Iizuka, believes there is always room for innovation in both the 3D and 2D Sonic game series. While understanding player expectations, Sonic Team aims to avoid stagnation and continuously considers new elements to bring a fresh standard to the games. They plan to have traditional 2D Sonic games alongside the 3D titles, as seen with the upcoming release of Sonic Superstars.
Sonic Team head, Takashi Iizuka, has hinted at the possibility of classic Sonic Team franchises such as Nights into Dreams or Burning Rangers being resurrected, as Sonic Team Japan has been on a hiring spree and has more people than ever before. However, Iizuka is currently focused on his role as creative officer for the Sonic brand.
Shadow the Hedgehog won't be featured in the upcoming release Sonic Superstars, as it's a classic series game and Shadow is not part of the classic series. However, Sonic Team still wants to create a game for all the Shadow fans out there at some point in the future.
