Mayotte demolishes shantytown in French territory.
French authorities have begun demolishing homes in a large slum in Mayotte, the country's poorest department, as part of Operation Wuambushu, aimed at tackling sub-standard housing and illegal migration. The operation is expected to last all week, with 135 dwellings to be razed out of around 1,000 sub-standard homes slated for destruction. The move has been criticised by some associations as a violation of migrants' rights, but has been supported by local officials and residents. Out of Mayotte's estimated 350,000 residents, half do not possess French nationality.
