Kentucky Mourns Loss of Sign Language Interpreter Virginia Moore

Virginia Moore, the sign language interpreter for Gov. Andy Beshear in Kentucky, has died. She was an integral part of keeping around 700,000 deaf and hard-of-hearing Kentuckians abreast of important updates from Team Kentucky during the pandemic. Moore was the executive director of the Kentucky Commission on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, where she had worked since 1995 and was appointed as the executive director in 2009. She became well known while appearing with Beshear, giving Kentucky updates during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gov. Beshear's sign language interpreter passes away.

Virginia Moore, the sign language interpreter who accompanied Gov. Beshear during several COVID-19 updates, has died. Beshear announced her death on Facebook and described her as a "rock of stability and grace during the pandemic." Moore had announced in October 2020 that she had stage 1 uterine cancer and left the daily pandemic briefings, but after treatment, she said she was cancer-free a few weeks later.

Kentucky Mourns Loss of Sign Language Interpreter Virginia Moore

Virginia Moore, a sign language interpreter and Executive Director of the Kentucky Commission on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, has passed away. Moore had been a constant presence during the pandemic, interpreting for Gov. Andy Beshear's "Team Kentucky" briefings. She had been diagnosed with stage one uterine cancer in October 2020 but returned to her interpreting duties in November. Memorial services are pending, and donations can be made in her name to the Kentucky School for the Deaf Jacob’s Hall Museum or the Knowledge Center on Deafness.
