US-Canada border restrictions impact Haitian asylum seekers at Roxham Road.

A Haitian family crossed the US-Canada border illegally just before new restrictions on asylum seekers took effect. The Safe Third Country Agreement, which restricts certain migrants from seeking protections in Canada, was revised by US President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The agreement applies to individuals who have transited through a country where they could have made an asylum claim because it is deemed safe. Roxham Road, a remote street that connects Champlain, New York, with Hemmingford, Quebec, was a loophole in the agreement, but it is not an official crossing. US Border Patrol has recently seen a historic high number of migrant crossings in the northern region.

Biden-Trudeau border deal impacts asylum seekers and migrant intake.

Asylum seekers continued to cross into Canada through the unofficial United States border crossing into Quebec at Roxham Road a day after the two countries amended the Safe Third Country Agreement to stem the influx. Under the revised pact, anyone who crosses into either country anywhere along the land border and who applies for asylum within 14 days will be turned back. Critics fear that enforcing the amended agreement by apprehending people who cross anywhere along the land border could be a logistical nightmare and put people at risk, driving them underground and toward riskier modes of travel.
