"Indonesia Receives New Wave of Rohingya Refugees by Boat"

Over 100 Rohingya refugees, including women and children, have arrived in Indonesia's Aceh province, while hundreds more are stranded on two unseaworthy vessels in the Andaman Sea. The latest arrivals join the more than 1,000 Rohingya refugees who landed in Aceh province last month. Although Indonesia is not a signatory to the UN Convention on Refugees, it has a history of accepting refugees. The UNHCR has called for immediate search and rescue efforts to find the stranded boats, warning of the risk of fatalities if they are not rescued soon. The Rohingya, considered one of the most persecuted minority groups, have been fleeing Myanmar since a military-led crackdown in 2017.

Rohingya refugees face perilous journey to Indonesia

About 250 Rohingya refugees, fleeing persecution in Myanmar, are stranded at sea after their attempt to land in Indonesia was rejected. Two other boats carrying around 350 refugees were also prevented from landing earlier in the week. Locals in Bireuen refused to allow the third boat to land and pushed it back out to sea. When the boat tried to land again in Muara Batu, the refugees were lined up and escorted back. The refugees, including women and children, have been at sea for almost three weeks and are in desperate need of food and water.

Cyclone Mocha wreaks havoc on Bangladesh and Myanmar coast.

Cyclone Mocha hit the coast of Myanmar and southeastern Bangladesh, uprooting trees, damaging homes, and causing a storm surge. Two people were killed in Myanmar, and thousands of people sought shelter in monasteries, pagodas, and schools. Bangladesh evacuated 1.27 million people, but the storm mostly missed the country. The Rohingya refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar was spared from the central thrust of the cyclone. Cyclones in the Bay of Bengal are becoming more intense more quickly due to climate change.

Cyclone Mocha wreaks havoc on Myanmar and Bangladesh coast.

Cyclone Mocha caused storm surges and flooding in the Myanmar port city of Sittwe, damaging buildings and disrupting communication networks. However, major refugee camps in low-lying neighboring Bangladesh were largely spared. Around 400,000 people were evacuated in Myanmar and Bangladesh ahead of the cyclone, one of the strongest storms to hit the region in recent years. The vulnerable settlements in Cox's Bazar, where over one million Rohingya refugees live, were left relatively unscathed. The cyclone hit an area where around six million people were already in need of humanitarian assistance, according to the UN.

Cyclone Mocha threatens Bangladesh and Myanmar with major evacuations.

Aid agencies in Bangladesh and Myanmar are preparing for disaster as Cyclone Mocha, equivalent to a category 3 Atlantic hurricane, approaches. The storm is expected to make landfall between Myanmar's Rakhine state and southeastern Bangladesh's Cox's Bazar, home to the world's largest refugee camp, on Sunday. Disaster response teams and thousands of local volunteers have been put on standby, and emergency shelter, hygiene kits, and water containers are ready to be distributed. The Rohingya refugees living in the overcrowded camps in Cox's Bazar are particularly vulnerable, with their shelters only able to withstand wind speeds of 40 kph.

Cyclone Mocha threatens Bangladesh and Myanmar, including world's largest refugee camp.

Bangladesh and Myanmar are preparing to evacuate hundreds of thousands of people as Cyclone Mocha, a severe cyclonic storm, is expected to hit land on Sunday with wind speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour and gusts up to 175 kph between Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh and Kyaukpyu in Myanmar. Nearly 500,000 people are expected to be evacuated, with 576 cyclone shelters ready to provide refuge to those who are moved from their homes along the coast. The International Rescue Committee has warned that the cyclone poses a threat to Rohingya refugees who fled from neighboring Myanmar and are living in camps in Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh.

Cyclone Mocha threatens refugee camp and Southeast Asia.

Cyclone Mocha, a very severe cyclonic storm, is expected to hit western Myanmar and Bangladesh's Cox's Bazar, where around 1 million Rohingya refugees live in flimsy shelters. The storm's winds could peak at 220 kph just before making landfall on Sunday morning, with a storm surge of up to 2.5 meters likely to inundate low-lying coastal areas. Aid agencies are ramping up their emergency preparedness and response with local and refugee communities, while residents in coastal areas of Myanmar have started to evacuate their homes and seek shelter.
