Gagosian gallery in Chelsea is hosting "Avedon 100," an exhibition marking the centenary of Richard Avedon's birth. The exhibition features 220 prints, including portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Marian Anderson, and civil rights workers. Avedon's photographs are known for their staged performances, and the exhibition is organized thematically and theatrically. While Avedon's fashion photographs are technically polished, his most profound portraits are of his father, Jacob Israel Avedon, who is completely resistant to the famous Avedon charm.
To celebrate Richard Avedon's centenary, over 150 artists, musicians, fashion icons, and other public figures have selected their favorite images from his extensive portfolio for the exhibition and book "Avedon 100" at Gagosian in New York. The images cover the full scope of Avedon's career, including his groundbreaking portraiture of models, Hollywood stars, politicians, social activists, and everyday Americans. The exhibition showcases six decades of his work, chosen by figures who run the gamut of culture and media.
