Big Sur’s Highway 1 Reopens Ahead of Schedule, Reconnecting Coastline Economies
California’s Regent’s Slide reconstruction led to the early reopening of Highway 1 from Carmel to Cambria at noon on Jan. 14, about 90 days ahead of the March 30 target, restoring a critical coastal route and economic lifeline for Big Sur. Crews used remotely operated heavy equipment, thousands of steel shear dowels up to 60 feet long, spider excavators, and real-time monitoring to stabilize slopes after a landslide, with further closures possible during winter debris removal.
