German Police Use AI to Arrest Red Army Faction Fugitive and Uncover Weapons Cache
Investigative journalists using AI tools had been tracing a fugitive member of the Red Army Faction, Daniela Klette, well before German police arrested her in Berlin. Klette, 65, was suspected of committing robberies and attempted murder between 1999 and 2016 to finance her underground life. The journalists used an image search tool to track her down, but did not pass on their findings to the police due to policy and safeguarding sources. Klette's arrest has been hailed as a major breakthrough, highlighting the use of AI in tracking down criminals, while also raising questions about the effectiveness of police and security agencies in politically charged investigations.
